Studies show that the addition of trees to our environment produces a calming effect on the human psyche within a matter of minutes.
Trees reduce stress and even rates of violence. Apartment complexes with trees enjoy lower crime rates than comparable complexes without them. Trees also absorb odors, filter out harmful particles from the air, cool surface temperatures, and reduce noise levels. Homes and businesses surrounded by trees consume less energy and sell for more money on the real estate market. Trees act as a privacy buffer, provide an inviting environment for recreation, and in the case of fruit trees, even yield free food.
Northern Virginia is blessed with an incredible environmental endowment. More than half of northern Virginia is forest land. Yet explosive population growth in the region is leading to increased construction and deforestation, resulting in increased runoff and surface temperatures. Air and water quality is being degraded and available green spaces are shrinking. Forests along the Chesapeake Bay have been cut in half from their historic norms, leading to habitat declines for numerous local species.
However, with determined efforts, these trends can be reversed. Nationally, overall rates of deforestation have slowed to almost a standstill for the past several decades. Some areas are beginning to see forest cover increases. By volunteering with Beautify Virginia, you can help restore our state’s forests. We work with property owners and others to determine the most favorable locations and tree species to work with. We coordinate the digging, planting, and maintenance of trees to ensure successful results. Together we can beautify our state, one tree at a time.
